Tonight, the challenge of taking a friendship and turning it into a relationship is put into question on the new show "Friends to Lovers?" on Bravo. Whether you've experienced it for yourself or you haven't, the idea of risking a perfectly good friendship by putting it through the complexities of a relationship is pretty scary.
"Friends to Lovers" explores the struggles between five pairs of friends as they attempt to take their friendships to the next level. Kris Ruby, CEO of Ruby Media Group, a public relations and social media firm in NYC, takes a leap of faith this season as she tries to make romance work with her best friend Alex Goldman.
I had the pleasure of working with Kris when I was still a student and am grateful to now be able to call her my friend. I got the chance to speak with her about the new show and her thoughts on taking a chance on love with a best friend:
Q: Given your successful career and how busy you are, do you find it hard to make time to date?
Absolutely! I have no time to date while running a PR and social media agency, so this show was a great opportunity for me to set aside some time to prioritize love for the first time in years (or ever, really!). Prior to this show you could find me in the office on a Saturday night, working. I definitely think this show changed my perspective and got me to “live a little” more and take more risks.
Q: What is your biggest pet peeve in a date or significant other?
My biggest pet peeve with a date is someone who is on his phone and who isn’t being present. Although I run a social media agency and I am always connected, I still try to find time to unplug. I have such limited time that when I do spend it with someone else, I want to make sure we are both giving each other our undivided attention. I also think digital compatibility is a big issue that we will see more of in 2015. If you aren’t digitally compatible with someone, can it really work?
Q: What trait in Alex is most attractive to you?
When Alex took my consulting advice to start his own company, his ambition was attractive to me. I like drive and ambition so I was definitely excited to see he turned his dream into a reality and followed my advice.
Q: What advice would you give to friends that are trying to make a relationship out of their friendship?
Understand the risk you are taking. It is definitely a big risk and is different than casually dating someone you don’t know, where you have nothing to lose if it doesn’t go well. My advice is to understand whether your friendship can survive the roller coaster and if you are willing to risk the friendship to take it to the next level.
Q: Any sneak peeks you can give us on what to look forward to during the season?
You will see social media play a huge role in the show throughout my relationship with Alex.
Be sure to catch Kris and Alex tonight at 10/9c on the series premiere of Friends to Lovers? on Bravo, as they test their friendship and relationship!
