Dirty Mojitos for the 4th of July

Happy Independence Day! I'm celebrating the 4th of July and my sister's birthday with a seafood cookout with the family. Here in the Sunshine State, this time of year is perfect for spending time outdoors, and nothing pairs with it better than refreshing drinks by the pool.

Today, I've got a great recipe for the perfect summer sip -- a dirty mojito!

This recipe serves one person. You'll need:

A glass

Four (4) lime wedges

A handful of mint leaves

1.5 oz of dark rum

2 tbs of white sugar

1/2 cup of club soda

Ice cubes

Start off by placing the mint leaves into your glass (I used around ten mint leaves) and add one lime wedge, muddling the mint and lime to release the oils and juice.

Add 2 tbs cup of sugar and two more lime wedges to the glass, again muddling the lime juice.

Fill your glass with ice cubes and add 1.5 oz of dark rum. I used Botran Reserva, an aged rum that is made in whisky barrels that previously aged sherry and port wines. Then, fill the glass with about 1/2 cup of club soda and stir.

And, there you have it--a dirty mojito with the perfect blend of sweet and tart. I hope you have a lovely and safe 4th of July, with family, friends and loved ones!
