Devoción Coffee: El Cañamo

If you know me, you know I thrive off coffee. I don't consider myself a connoisseur by any means, but I'm confident that I know good coffee when I taste it. Insert Devoción Coffee here; launched in 2006, this Colombia-based company recently opened a Brooklyn, NY outpost in 2014, and has been proudly serving the freshest Colombian coffee since.

Devoción's story is a bit different - their coffee beans are sourced from hand-selected farms in the most inaccessible areas of Colombia, where they believe the best coffee in the world comes from. They develop long-term relationships with coffee growers and establish social and environmental programs to help secure their future. Because 90% of Devoción's coffee comes from regions in Colombia with significant guerilla activity, their work brings pride and change to people in these troubled regions.

Devoción sent me three varieties of coffee to try - El Cañamo, Red Barrel and Toro. In this three-part series, I'll show you a new coffee recipe tailored to the taste of each variety. I'm going to start off with El Cañamo - a special edition coffee with intense notes of blueberry and mangosteen.

With the berry and tropical flavors of El Cañamo, I thought it'd be perfect for a cappuccino, a delicate yet bold coffee-type that will help bring out El Cañamo's intense notes of blueberry and mangosteen.

After finely grinding the beans, I made about two ounces of espresso and steamed two ounces of milk to create another two ounces of foam. You'll want to swirl your steamed milk a bit before pouring, to center the foam and give it a bit more consistency. Then, pour the milk and milk foam into your espresso - you can serve as is or add a little sugar (I like my cappuccinos sweet), and stir.

It is absolutely delicious. The cappuccino is rich in texture and flavor and brings out the bold notes of the El Cañamo blend perfectly. This is a great, lighter espresso drink for pairing with dessert or relaxing with Netflix. You can shop for more blends here, and follow Devoción USA on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
